Holiday Vacation Travel Tips

Ready for the vacation of a lifetime this holiday but can’t shake the feeling you’re forgetting something?  Not to worry:  here are a few holiday travel tips to help you stay on track.  Whether you’ll be spending time with your family or off to a getaway, it’s important to plan.  Number one travel tip:  find out peak travel dates—then avoid them like the plague!  There are two problems associated with peak travel. One: everything costs more from plane tickets to hotels to car rentals. And two: everyone else will be traveling those same dates.  If at all possible, plan for your trip to start a few days before the peak travel period and then plan to come back a few days after.  It’s your best bet for finding great price reductions and to avoid holiday traffic headaches.

Try to get the best deals for your dollar.  Look for flight specials and vacation destination deals.  If you’re visiting family for the holidays and don’t need a hotel room or transportation then all you have to worry about is flight costs.  Websites that offer great holiday deals are Expedia, Travelocity and Cheaptickets.com.  You’ll also be surprised to learn that many airlines offer great deals if you search their websites directly.  One great shop-by-comparison site I would recommend is SideStep.com, which compares every flight special sorted by price.  I’ve had the best success using their services.

If you’re destination doesn’t include free room and board then I would recommend that you do flight comparison shop for all-inclusive package deals.  There are plenty of great places to stay during the holidays that offer three- and five-night vacation packages, meals and activities included.  Also factor in the price of a car rental to cover as many of your needs as possible.  Then, the earlier you book, the better your deal.

There is one tip in particular that can greatly reduce your stress level.  You know that sinking feeling you get sitting in the airport waiting to board your first connection when you hear the airline attendant politely announce that the flight has been delayed?  You’ve got a connecting flight scheduled to depart 30 minutes after this flight is scheduled to land, and pre-boarding begins 30 minutes prior to take off to make sure the flight leaves on time.  That’s when you wonder why you didn’t schedule a later connecting flight.

By selecting connecting flights with at least an hour and a half of layover this nervousness can be completely avoided. I’m aware that you may choose a connecting flight that is close in time to your first so that you may reach your destination quicker and avoid the dullness of being in the airport for too long. However, all things considered, half an hour is that long when you have to leave the plane, locate the departure flight and gate, which may be in another terminal, then get settled before it is time to board the plane. What’s more important is that by giving yourself this extra time you are almost guaranteeing that you will make your connection, a guarantee that is worth it during the hectic holiday travel season.

Also, prepare yourself ahead of time for airport security and pack in accordance with the airport’s security measures.  It saves lots of hassle.

One security measure to stick with is to pack all liquids and gels bigger than 3 ml in the bags you will check.  There are signs up everywhere stating that you cannot carry liquids and gels through the security checkpoint.  This includes lotions, toothpaste, baby oil, aerosol hairsprays, perfume bottles, bottled water and other items.  If found at the checkpoint, they will be confiscated.  Just pack them away and meet them at baggage claim when you get to your destination.  You are allowed to carry liquids and gels 3 ml and under in zip-top clear bags so you’re not completely bereft.  Best travel tip: follow the rules.  You, your family, airport security and everyone waiting in line behind you will be much happier for it.

Most of us want to make the best out of our travel. We also want to get the true worth of our money, especially when we are travelling. One of the ways to ensure this is travelling off-season. Though the idea of travelling off-season has certain benefits, one has to keep in mind the shortcoming of the same.

The first and foremost thing to be kept in mind is that you should list out the places you would like to travel. You can take your pick between a deluxe resort in Vermont or in Colorado. These places might turn out to be very expensive in winter season, but you can get an off of around 75% from the regular rates if you are visiting the place in off-season. You might not be able to go skiing but you can still enjoy other activities like horse-riding, hiking and motor biking to the mountains around the place. You can in turn spend your savings on a lavish vacation, which would not have been possible otherwise.

Visiting a place in off-season does not only entail a lot of savings but also ensure that you can see the museums, restaurants and other places without much of crowd. The place might look more attractive during winters due to the applied tactics for attracting tourists, but it is always better to enjoy the place in a local flamboyance than with the artificial glamour added in season, which is more appreciable than what most of the season travelers are able to catch. Off season travel to a place also allows you to explore the place for real.

It is always advisable that you choose your place for vacations very carefully. The task has been made easier by the government websites that have a separate account of the tourism department of every country. These tourism related information includes not only the places to see but also the local weather and other facilities available in a particular area. It also gives out information on other factors relating to that place. You should always keep in mind that weather is the primary factor for deciding upon a venue for vacation, especially in season travel. Hence, it is advisable that you confirm the basic factors from the government websites before deciding your destination.

Inquire about the rents at hotels and inquire at different hotels. Hotels want to remain full, no matters which season it is. So by inquiring at different hotels, you can increase your chances of getting a cheap and nice deal. It is always advisable to talk to the manager of the hotel rather than dialing number 800.

You should also ensure that the hotel, you wish to stay in, has no renovation plans for the immediate future as that could severely hamper your high hopes of a peaceful and comfortable vacation with constant noises.

The morale of the story is that if you are planning to go for an off-season vacation, you should make sure you have a strong groundwork on the place you want to visit as well as the amenities you can take advantage of during your stay. By keeping these factors in mind, you can actually have a great vacation with great savings.

The national airline of Australia is Qantas. Maintaining its main hub at Sydney International Airport, Quantas also has smaller hubs at Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane. It runs international flights into Brisbane, Perth, Singapore, London, and Los Angeles.

The world’s second oldest airline in continuous operation and the oldest airline in the English-speaking world, Quantas was founded in 1920. It is a member of the Oneworld alliance, one of the world’s largest airline alliance programs.

Qantas is privately held, and also one of the world’s most profitable air carriers. The World Airline Awards voted Qantas third best airline in the world in 2008. Quantas and its affiliates maintain hundreds of Airbus and Boeing planes, naming each after stars, Greek gods and goddesses, famous Australian aviators, Australian birds, and Australian cities.

The name Qantas, always spelled without a “u,” is an acronym for “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.”

Adventure travelers seeking to tour Antarctica can fly on Qantas charters booked by Croydon Travel. Qantas flew its first tours of Antarctica in 1977. These tours were suspended in 1979 after the disastrous crash of Air New Zealand Flight 901 on Mt. Erebus, but were restarted the summer of 1994. Qantas ensures that all its Antarctic flight crews have had extensive training in polar operations and know what to do in whiteouts, such as those that contributed to the 1979 Air New Zealand disaster.

Qantas rewards loyal customers. Passengers accumulate points based on distance flown, with bonuses for travel in premium classes. Miles are available from both Qantas and Oneworld alliance flights. After criticism for the availability of reward seats, Qantas overhauled its frequent flier program in 2008. Its two new features are Any Seat rewards, allowing members to redeem any seat on the place at a price, and Points Plus Pay, which permits fliers who do not have quite enough mileage points to pay with a combination of points and cash.

Qantas was the first airline to allow mobile phone use during flights. Also, the airline provides wireless internet as well as seat-back access to email and web browsing. The Australian carrier also has an extensive in-flight entertainment system. Some planes use Total Entertainment, which is an audio/video on demand system. Other planes use the Mainscreen System, were drop-down video menus offer either recent films or television programs, depending on long the flight is.

Quantas has recently announced a program to offset its carbon emissions. The program encourages passengers to fly carbon-neutral, and allows them to pay for their offsets in either frequent flier points of cash. Qantas donates program proceeds to government-certified carbon offset projects with a Greenhouse Friendly authentication. Professional golfer Greg Norman and Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe are representatives for the program.

American Airlines

American Airlines is the world’s largest passenger airline with headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, which is also its main hub.  American Airlines serves hundreds of destinations and operates flights in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Caribbean, Japan, China and India.

American Airlines was founded in 1930 and is the first airline to offer electronic ticketing.  American Airlines is also the first airline to offer a frequent flyer program.  Its AAdvantage rewards program remains the largest frequent flyer program with more than 50 million members.

American Airlines currently offers travel service to over 260 cities with almost 700 aircraft.  American is very popular on routes between the United States and Latin American, carrying over a million passengers between the two markets each year.  In fact, American Airlines carries more passengers between the United States and Latin America than any other airline.  In addition, American Airlines has a strong international market.

American has four airline hubs throughout the world.  They are located in Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.  American Airlines also has a large presence in Los Angeles, New York City and Boston. American Airlines employees thousands of workers at its maintenance bases in Tulsa, Kansas City and Fort Worth.

A well-known subsidiary of American is its regional carrier American Eagle. This small airline with the smaller planes often provides the only service at less-traveled airports in the US, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. American Eagle’s home offices are also located in Fort Worth, Texas.

American Airlines is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance, the third largest airline alliance in the world.  An airline alliance is an agreement between at least two airlines to work together, with member airlines offering integrated services in order to make airline travel more convenient for passengers.  Alliances usually work around shared passenger terminals and frequent flyer programs. Oneworld celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2009.

American Airlines grew substantially when it acquired Trans World Airlines (TWA) and the TWA hub in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2001.  However, the deal caused American to lose a substantial amount of money.  The September 11th terrorist attacks, in which American Airlines planes were hijacked, also contributed to the airline’s financial problems.  As a result, American Airlines was forced to drop its hub in St. Louis and lay off dozens of former TWA employees.  American is still struggling financially, and in 2008 was the first airline to announce it would start charging fees for checked baggage.  While the move was unpopular with travelers, other airlines eventually followed American’s lead.

Most of American’s jets are McDonnell Douglas MD-82 or MD-88 series twinjets. The carrier announced recently that it will order the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to its fleet.

In 2008 American became the first carrier to offer in-flight Internet service on all its planes. This innovation came only a year after the airline began offering Wi-Fi on its flights within the United States.
