Extra regional flight capacity is being laid on by Flybe in preparation for potential strike action at British Airways from this weekend.

Flybe will run 262 flights across 10 routes to and from Gatwick, including seven a day to Jersey; four a day to Newcastle and three a day to Aberdeen and Dusseldorf.

The airline will run 288 flights across 27 routes to and from Southampton, including five a day to Edinburgh and Glasgow; six a day to Manchester and multiple frequencies to Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Dusseldorf.

British Airways strike to go ahead

BA cabin crew have name 7 dates when they intend to take industrial action. Their union, UNITE, said there will be a 3 day strike starting on 20 March 2010 and a 4 day strike starting 27 March 2010.

Those with holidays planned over the Easter break will be relieved although it will come as little consolation for passengers affected by the strike dates.

UNITE have not ruled out further action after the Easter holidays.

Comair Limited, operator of British Airways in South Africa has partnered with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) to expand its domestic route network to include Nelspruit (Mbombela).  As of 4th May 2010, British Airways will commence with six flights a week between Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and OR Tambo International.

“This partnership will deliver much needed competition and additional capacity on the route between Mpumalanga and Gauteng and both business and leisure travellers are expected to benefit from the new scheduled service,” said Charles Ndabeni, CEO, MTPA.

The short flight operated by a Boeing 737-300 taking just 40 minutes will depart from OR Tambo at 10:40am allowing the international inbound market to connect. The return flight will depart from Kruger Mpumalanga International at 12:00pm.

Stuart Cochrane, Comair’s Executive Manager for Sales and Route Development stated that “we are very excited that our partnership with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency has resulted in this opportunity to bring more international and local travellers to the region. Comair’s increased capacity will allow travellers easy access to Mpumalanga whilst at the same time raising the profile of the province that has so many beautiful experiences to offer”.

Under the British Airways livery, Comair currently offers flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Harare, Livingstone, Victoria Falls, Windhoek, Mauritius and between Cape Town and Durban.
