What Will Another Volcanic Eruption Do To The Airline Industry
Raw Video: Iceland Volcano Spews More Ash
As European air-travel gets back to normal after the Icelandic volcano eruption many are asking what the long term effects of the shut-down are likely to be.
Some people are saying that the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption that grounded much of Europe could result in a very unsettled period for aviation. Much like the effects of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Some regular travelers are saying that they will now be thinking twice about taking a plane if an alternative mode of transport is available. For example, some people who telecommute between Europe and the United Kingdom, are now opting to take the train.
It’s clear that the volcanic ash cloud has had a significant psychological effect upon some travelers. But some US travel industry gurus have said that they don’t expect the recent ash cloud problems to adversely effect American travellers who are planning to fly to Europe this year.
But airlines, already suffering due to the economic downturn, are now having to contend with the chaos created by the ash cloud. There is also the strong chance that the neighbouring, larger volcano Katla will also erupt. Katla has erpted each of the last 3 times that Eyjafjallajokull erupted.
If uncertainty over the volcano eruptions persists then this will inevitable effect traveler confidence. This will directly impact airlines financial recovery plans during 2010.
There continues to be major differences of opinion from various aviation authorities regarding what should be the proper response to a massive volcanic eruption. Many now claim that the decision to ground all commercial aircraft, leading to the cancellation of 100,000 flights, was a massive over-reaction. Others are saying that this was the only sensible course of action that would protect travelers.
This recent crisis exposed significan flaws in the way in which european air traffic management is carried out. These issues led to the uncoordinated and confusing responses the the volcanic ash cloud issue. This system is now to undergo an urgent reform.
