Many of us look at price as the bottom line when we book flights across the country. However, we may not realize that hundreds of dollars could be added onto our original ticket price in surcharges and fees by the time our flight is over. Cheap travel deals still exist, but Americans will perhaps have to make a few concessions when flying in 2010. When you’re looking for a cheap airline flight, there are many things to consider.

Many people complain about the cost of airline flight tickets these days. One complaint is that “taxes and fees keep going up.” Some of these airline ticket fees are automatically added on, while others are completely avoidable. For instance, you will not be able to avoid some of the airport security fee taxes, such as the 9/11 Security Fee ($10), the Passenger Facility Charges ($18), the Federal Domestic Flight Segment Fee ($3.50 each way), the U.S. International Departure tax ($15.40 per international departure), the US International Arrival tax ($15.40), the US Customs fee ($5), the Immigration fee ($7) and an Animal and Plant Health Inspection fee ($5).

On the other hand, you can have a cheap flight ticket if you think ahead and bring some of your own airline flight goodies along. For instance, many airlines have dropped the complimentary pretzels and sodas, replacing them with snacks for purchase, costing anywhere from -. Pillows and blankets will cost you to rent on Jet Blue (although you will also receive a coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond). United has announced a “Premier Baggage” plan that costs 9/year, which allows up to 8 travelers on the same confirmation number the ability to check two standard bags each, without paying extra. Of course, this plan still does not cover overweight or oversized bags. Mileage Premier Plus fliers are exempt from first and second bag fees, which cost – for other passengers. The airlines with the highest baggage fees include American Airlines, Delta, US Airways and United. The airlines with the lowest baggage fees and cheap travel deals include Southwest, Frontier, Jet Blue and Air Tran.
