The Dutch capital will be coming alive with cultural events and attractions this November, from welcoming in the arrival of St. Nicolas to holding parties in spaces ordinarily reserved for art. There will be plenty going on to keep all types entertained and as an added bonus, culture lovers keen to get in on the action can take advantage of cheap flights to Amsterdam this winter when they book between 7th September and 5th October 2010. Here are some of the events to look forward to:
Party at the Museum
On Saturday 6th of November 2010, roughly 40 exhibition halls and museums across Amsterdam throw open their doors until 2am for an evening of culture and entertainment during the city’s annual Museum Night. Absorb the atmosphere while wandering around the exhibits and enjoying live jazz and cocktails. Or dance the night away on the temporary dance floors set up in some of the major museums, such as the Hermitage and Van Gogh Museum.
Welcome St. Nicolas to Town
Every November (this year the 14th), a cloaked and bearded Sinterklaas (St. Nicolas) arrives in Amsterdam and parades around the city, accompanied by helpers throwing sweets into the crowd. The best place to catch the fun is at the Maritime Museum at noon (arrive by 11.30am to secure a good spot at the front). The event is a precursor to the 5th of December, when the Amsterdammers exchange small anonymous gifts at home.
Head to the IDFA
Holidaymakers can immerse themselves in the world of the true story on screen at the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) – the world’s largest documentary film festival. In 2010 it will run for 12 days from the 17th to the 28th of November, one day longer than normal. Snap up the cheap flights to Amsterdam available online and see one of over 300 films that reveal fascinating and unforgettable tales. The films can be viewed at cinemas across the city, but for an unforgettable experience head to the impressive Tuschinskitheater. Be sure to secure tickets in advance from their website – the most popular shows sell out quickly.
